NEW in AVIONARY 5.1 (April 2026)

 

Languages:

Three languages are added to Avionary: Azerbaijani (AZ), and two forms of Kurdish (KU): Kurmanji or Northern Kurdish (kmr) and Sorani or Central Kurdish (ckb).

 

Extension and update in several languages:

Apart from addition of bird names of added species, major extensions and/or revisions were made for Afrikaans (af), Basque (eu) and Bulgarian (bg). Significant adjustments were made for Corsican (co), Frisian (fy), Gallegan (gl), Greek (el). Minor extensions and updates in most other languages.

 

Basis:

The basis for the Avionary taxonomy is now Avilist v2025, the new consolidated world list developed by representatives of three major world list: IOC (www.worldbirdnames.org, latest version 15.1 of March 2025), Clements/eBird list (Birds of the World) and Birdlife/HBW.

 

About 32 additional species and new species splits, as follows:

Added splits (4):

Butorides (striata) atricapilla, Trogon (elegans) ambiguus, Pogoniulus (pusillus) uropygialis, Vireo (gilvus) swainsoni..

Added species from Eastern Palearctic/Oriental (2):

Dendrocopos macei, Larvivora tanensis.

Added species from Nearctic (8):

Nomonyx dominicus, Chordeiles gundlachii, Poecile sclateri, Polioptila californica, Polioptila nigriceps, Troglodytes musculus, Turdus plumbeus, Setophaga pitiayumi.

Added species from Africa (16):

Scotopelia peli, Stephanoaetus coronatus, Hieraaetus ayresii, Kaupifalco monogrammicus, Merops lafresnayii, Laniarius aethiopicus, Eremomela pusilla, Eremomela canescens, Camaroptera brachyura, Cisticola ruficeps, Cisticola marginatus, Muscicapa aquatica, Oenanthe albifrons, Cinnyris mariquensis, Cinnyris cupreus, Quelea erythrops.

Added species from elsewhere (2):

Pterodroma baraui, Pterodroma sandwichensis.

 

New in Avionary 5.0 (December 2024)

New languages:

Nine languages were added to Avionary: Armenian (HY), Corsican (Corsu, 2 variants: Co1, Co2), Occitan (OC), four Sámi Languages: South (Sma), Lule (Smj), Inari (Smn) and Skolt (Sms), and two Karelian languages: North (Krl) and Olonets (Olo), bringing the total to 60 languages.

Information about all the languages is now simply accessible in two stages: quick information through pop-ups, and more detailed information by opening a window. See further “How to use”.

Extension and update in several languages:

Apart from addition of bird names from the added regions, major extensions and/or revisions were made for Galician (gl) and Romanian (ro). Significant adjustments were made for Basque (eu), Bulgarian (bg), Dutch (nl), Faroese (fo), Luxemburgish (lb), Swedish (sv), Norwegian (no), Estonian (et), Greek (el), Albanian (sq) and English (en). Minor extensions and updates in most other languages.

Dutch List of the Birds of the World

A Dutch world bird list is now available for the first time, under the button “NL Wereldlijst”. The searchable list contains Dutch names of over 17,000 species and species groups following the systematics of eBird/birdsoftheworld.org, together with English names. Splits and lumps of IOC (worldbirdnames.org) up to and including version 14.2 are accounted for.

Wikipedia:

A Ukrainian Wikipedia link was added, bringing the total to 8 languages.

Access to Wikipedia information of a selected species was improved by pop-ups simply activated by touching the relevant “Wiki”‘ button, without the need to open a new window. 

Basis:

The 14.2 version of the IOC World Bird List of August 2024 (www.wordlbirdnames.org) is the basis for the Avionary 5.0 taxonomy. Some of the changes in the 15.1 list were already included.
